Zine
Fan-zine using creative photography and experimental type. I want to talk about the importance of
perception and how it affectsthe world around us. I’ll start with the basics of perception and then all
the different ways we try to influence our perception in our daily lives.
Reflection and Projection
People in our lives are supposed to offer a relatively accurate representation of ourselves. They
usually reflect or mirror back who we are when we express ourselves to them. This is an important aspect
of attachment—feeling seen, heard, and valued. When this doesn’t happen, problems arise within the
relationship. Over time, if we receive skewed images of ourselves, we may start to believe these
distorted reflections, causing us to question what we once knew and believed about ourselves.
In the first few pages when introducing the topic, the subject’s face looks away, partly obscured or
blurred. This represents the apprehensiveness of their reflection and other people’s projections. The
red text symbolizes the internal turmoil and the harmful monologue that the characters are experiencing
within themselves. It is scattered and messy.
The typefaces I used were san serif blocky text. I primarily used the font ACID TM. The font is very
versatile and makes for a readable yet simulates handmade experience.
I chose to do my zine in three colors; red, white, and black because fan-zines are most often
independently self-made and these colors are the most low cost and easiest to print.
